What's New at Met-Con
Miami’s MET2 Project is proving to be
a challenge!
Met-Con, Inc. began
fabrication, back in November of 2007, of a large
truss measuring 29’ tall x 107’ long and weighing
300,000 pounds when completed. This truss is one of
six being fabricated to assist a Charlotte, NC.
Based Company to meet a very tight construction
timeline. The truss is part of the large “MET2
Project” in Miami and is required to be on site by
March 3, 2008.

The
truss is comprised of large beams constructed from
plates which presented new and interesting
challenges for Met-Con because the connections were
primarily “mill-to-bear” or flush welds which are
not common, says estimator, Dan Hurst of Met-Con.
Large welds and plate thickness of up to 5 inches
require massive amounts of preheating to bring the
steel up to temperatures acceptable to weld.
Met-Con staff has worked two shifts a day and
weekends in order to be able to complete the task by
the deadline.

job. This statistic is a devastating
reality because it has since been proven
