the fabrication and erection of structural steel.

medium sized business established in 1979, MET-CON is responsible for
fabricating and erecting some of the most visible structures in Central Florida,
including the new Orange County Convention Center, the Tree of Life at the
center of Walt Disney's Animal Kingdom, the Universal Studios parking structure,
and many of the space launch complexes at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC).

What's New at Met-Con
$8.3 Million Contact for the Marriott World Center Orlando
Met-Con is pleased to announce it has been
awarded an $8.3 million contract from PCL Construction Services for the
fabrication and erection of structural steel and miscellaneous metals required
in the construction of an exhibit hall for the Marriott World Center in Orlando,
Florida.
The project includes a 160,000 square foot,
3 story parking garage, and a 251,700 square foot exhibit hall expansion with
pre-function lobby space, new service areas, kitchen space, and an entrance
foyer that will tie-in to the existing hotel meeting spaces.
The parking garage sets on a steel H pile
foundation with pile caps and then is constructed entirely out of pre-cast
concrete.
The exhibit hall sets on large spread
footings and grade beams. The structure is made of approximately 2,500 tons of
steel with a building envelope consisting of metal panels, aluminum storefronts,
and stucco.
The exhibit hall consists of 14 each 244
foot long trusses which will be installed by a tandem hoisting operation (2
cranes).
The structural engineer is Walter P. Moore,
the architect is Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates.

Meet Jesse "J.
J." French: The Paint Expert
If
it is painted and it comes from Met-Con, Jesse
French is the man with the paint plan.
|
J. J. is the
supervisor of our paint department, has been with
Met-Con since 1989 and has the final word in the
quality and appearance of Met-Con’s stellar paint
finishes.
J. J. is certified by AISC with a sophisticated
paint endorsement and certified in the management of
hazardous waste. J. J.’s duties include the
overseeing of a four person department as well as
keeping daily paint reports and communicating with
independent paint inspectors.
J. J. is married to wife Jacquelyn and has two
daughters, Dana and Jaylnn. When J. J. is not at
work he loves to spend his time fishing and having
cookouts with family and friends. |

Don't Get
Beat by the Heat! Heat stress is a real risk
in Florida.
There are many
factors that can put an employee at risk for heat
stress. A person's age, weight and metabolism
coupled with resources of heat cause heat disorder.
There are 5 major sources of heat: air temperature,
radiant heat, air movement, humidity, and metabolic
heat. All of these conditions are causes of heat
stress.
There is a wide
span of health effects defining the symptoms of heat
stress. Symptoms range between simple headaches to
possible death. Learning some of the classic
symptoms of each may help identify a problem early
on.
Heat rash occurs in
persistently wetted skin by sweat evaporation. Heat
cramps occur in the working muscles of an
individual. Give these people rest and body fluid
replenishment. Heat stress sufferers may also
experience possible headache, nausea, weakness, and
thirst.
