INSPECTION FAQs
Why Should I have my overhead lifting equipment
inspected?

All overhead hoists in use SHALL meet the applicable
requirements for design, installation, testing,
inspection, maintenance, and operation as prescribed
by the manufacturer. OSHA-1926.554(6)

To insure the safety of your employees, minimize
down-time, and secure the peace of mind that all
functions of your overhead material handling
equipment are in full operating order you must
follow OSHA regulation, OSHA-1910.179
How often must inspections be performed?
MET-CON will submit a customized schedule based on
your operation requirement, Frequent or Periodic.

What will be inspected?
Electrification: (main disconnect, grounding,
collectors, festoon, hardware ie.. conduit,
fasteners)
Controls: (proper operation, pendant, push buttons,
warning devices, warning tags, strain relief)
Hoist: (limits, drum
reeving, hook condition, wire rope condition, brake
condition)
Trolley: (proper function, brake condition, end stop
condition, limits if applicable)
Bridge: (proper
function, brake condition, end stop condition, load
rating identification, limits if applicable)
Support Structure: (ladders, hand rails. platforms)
Chain Hoists: (chain condition, operation, trolley,
support rail, controls if applicable)
Air
Powered Hoists: (air supply hoses, chain condition,
operation, trolley, support rail)
Who will be performing my inspection?
MET-CON’s qualified service technicians trained to
current industry standards.
When can my overhead equipment be inspected?
MET-CON would prefer to inspect your equipment
during normal business hours so that we can observe
the usage in your daily application environment.
Special arrangements can be made on a tailored
program for after-hour inspection.
When can I expect my inspection results and
inspection certificate?
A
copy of the work order and an inspection sheet per
unit for your records will be mailed or faxed to you
upon completion of the reports. About 1 week lead
time.
Will any other work be performed other than the
inspection?
Any
work outside of the initial OSHA compliance
inspection will be noted on the work-order. Minor
repairs could be completed at the time of
inspection, based on approval only. All other
repairs would be quoted accordingly by Met-Con.
How will I know when it's time for my next scheduled
inspection?
Met-Con’s Service Department will notify you based
on the maintenance schedule for your equipment one
month prior to when it is due in order to set up an
appointment that will minimize the impact to your
productivity.
When is load-testing required and is it part of the
OSHA compliance inspection?
A
load-test is not part of the OSHA compliance
inspection product. A load-test is only required on
new installations, moving of existing equipment or a
load-bearing part repair. OSHA -1910.179k(1)(i)
If necessary Met-Con can provide load-testing upon
request for a nominal fee, a certificate will
accompany any testing done for your records and
shall be on file at your site readily available for
the life of the crane or hoist. OSHA -1910.179k(2)
